First-generation Dalit learners

"For first-generation Dalit learners, getting acclimatised to the campus lingo takes time. Many of them are not conversant with the discourse on sexuality, gendered relationships, and the jocular “language” resorted to by the privileged students and the faculty." "Unfortunately, institutions of higher learning mirror stereotypical social and political bigotries and stifle any expression of intellectual creativity. For many such students, the easiest mode of survival is to keep your head down, maintain silence, collect your degree and attempt to lead a “normal” life. Many others, unable to cope with the oppressive system, either drop out or kill themselves as a silent protest. As per the data shared by Union minister of state for education Subhas Sarkar in Rajya Sabha, dropouts from the OBCs, SCs, STs in all central universities, IITs and IIMs during the period 2018-2023 has crossed 19,000." Very often the methods of discrimination are subtle and sophisticated — disg...

What it means to be a Dalit

School left my father traumatised. He could never recover from the caste insults and the oppression. My freedom, hence, is always about making sure that my existence can never be erased anymore, whether as history or a story Source :  https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/comment/what-it-means-to-be-a-dalit-500007 Updated At: Apr 23, 2023 07:03 AM   What it means to be a Dalit Yogesh Maitreya Water in a broken pot can flow freely, without any shape or course to follow. But freedom comes with a lot of risks, especially when one does not know what to do with it. For most of my life, I have been surrounded with things that tend to belittle me, discourage me and make me feel as if I do not matter in the larger reality of the caste society within this nation. How am I supposed to feel ‘free’ in the ecology of social affairs in which I was historically unseen, cunningly invisible-ised, and silently erased? To gain my freedom in such circumstances is to shout out my existence so lou...

Dig deep to explore Ayodhya’s Buddhist link

Mallepalli Laxmaiah Chairperson, Centre for Dalit Studies, Hyderabad Many remnants of Buddha’s era came to light in the excavations by Cunningham, a British archaeologist, based on the historical findings in the diaries of Chinese travellers Faxian and Xuanzang. Cunningham concluded that there were remnants in Ayodhya as well. After the survey in 1862-63, Cunningham conducted another one in 1889-92. Then also, he came to the same conclusion. Yet another survey was conducted by AK Narayanan, who also confirmed the conclusions  There are about 100 Buddhist monasteries in Ayodhya. Over 3,000 Buddhist monks conduct their activities from these facilities. They are learning many things about Mahayana and Hinayana philosophies even today. Ayodhya also has an old Buddhist monastery. Vasubandhu, prominent among Buddhist philosophers, used to deliver sermons here. They also study various aspects of philosophy of life. Further, he wrote many books there,” wrote Xuanzang, a Buddhist traveller ...

Social justice : More about representation to social groups and less about redressing disadvantages, deprivation and discrimination that characterised the caste system

Kickstart a reversal  Disadvantages, Deprivations and Discrimination based on Caste  Social justice was more about representation to social groups and less about redressing disadvantages, deprivation and discrimination that characterised the caste system. This was linked to a steep decline in the very imagination of social justice. In politics you don’t stand at the dead end for too long. Someone comes and pushes you where you did not want to go. Or walks away with your valuables. That is precisely what the BJP has done to the politics of social justice through devious but dynamic strategies of selective accommodation of leaders, powerful appropriation of symbols, and micro targeting of smaller and sub-communities within the Bahujans. This is the challenge that the Congress faces today. A reversal of this sorry state of affairs would take a careful rethink of the theory and practice of policies and politics of social justice. Here are four concrete ideas to kick-start this thi...

The hidden caste codes of Silicon Valley

BBC World Service  The Documentary Sam, Harsha and Siddhant are tech workers of Indian descent, who all say they have experienced discrimination in corporate America. They are not being singled out on the basis of race, gender, religion or nationality, but by an invisible factor; one they were born into, and one that others like them come to the US to try to escape. They say they have faced discrimination because of their caste. A recent court case highlighted the issue. In 2020, California regulators sued the tech giant Cisco, claiming it discriminated against a worker on the basis of his caste. He was Dalit, the most oppressed caste, and his manager was from a dominant caste. Soon afterwards, a US Dalit civil rights group received more than 250 claims of caste discrimination from workers at numerous other tech companies. But what is it? How does it affect workers with Dalit heritage? And why do some people say legislating against caste discrimination in the US would be 'Hinduphob...
