Thinking, Fast and Slow

In his book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman goes over the two systems found in our mind that can make or break our ability to move forward and succeed in life. He talks about the fast and emotional system, and the slow, more logical system that makes up our whole mind. He breaks down the various effects of each system on our success, mentality, confidence, and teachability index. lessons to learn from book-Thinking, Fast and Slow. 1 Intuition and Logic  The book talks about our two decision-making mechanisms based on intuition and logic. While making a decision, we either rely on previous knowledge and experience, or we examine the current data and try to make a more logical decision. 2 Intuitive Decisions We make the decisions that get us in the most trouble and frustrate us with our intuition. Sujit Chattopadhyay

“The day I got my postgraduate degree, I didn’t waste a minute– I rushed back to my village, Ausgrum in Bengal to become a teacher. Yes, I had higher salary offers from schools in bigger towns, but for me, the 169 Rs. I was offered at my school village meant everything; I was hungry to teach the students from my village who needed a good teacher the most. And I taught at my school for 39 years and only retired because I’d hit my ‘retirement age’– 60, what a ridiculous concept! So there I was at 60, retired and expected to spend my years drinking sugary tea and whiling away my time on the charpoy! But I was restless, I didn’t want to retire and kept asking myself, ‘What shall I do now?’ A few days later, I got the answer. One morning, around 6:30 AM, I saw 3 young girls enter my house. I was shocked when they told me they’d cycled for over 23 kms to see the Master who’d retired! They were young tribal girls who were desperate to learn; with folded hands they asked, ‘Masterji...

THE ROMANI: AN INDIAN PEOPLE ABROAD AND ADRIFT?

“The Romani people also known as the Roma, are an Indo-Aryan people group, traditionally nomadic itinerants living mostly in Europe, as well as diaspora populations in the Americas. Linguistic and genetic evidence suggest that the Roma as a people originated from the northern Indian subcontinent. They are dispersed, but their most concentrated populations are located in Europe, especially Central, Eastern and Southern Europe (including Southern France), as well as Western Asia (mainly Turkey). The Romani people arrived in West Asia and Europe around 1007. Since the 19th century, some Romani people have also migrated to the Americas. There are an estimated one million Roma in the United States; and 800,000 in Brazil, most of whose ancestors emigrated in the 19th century from Eastern Europe. Brazil also includes a notable Romani community descended from people deported by the Portuguese Empire during the Portuguese Inquisition.  Linguistic evidence has indisputably shown that the roo...
