His colleague referred him to Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge University, where he later received his Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Ramanujan’s contributions to the theory of numbers were groundbreaking, including pioneering discoveries related to the partition function. In 2012, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day in India, paying tribute to this extraordinary mathematician who left an indelible mark on the field of mathematics.  LET’S DELVE INTO SOME KEY HIGHLIGHTS: PARTITION FUNCTION: Ramanujan made pioneering discoveries related to the properties of the partition function....

Many faces, no big idea

https://m.timesofindia.com/many-faces-no-big-idea/articleshow/106131411.cms Dec 19, 2023 | 20:21 IST INDIA alliance leaders who met yesterday should know time is running out for mounting an effective 2024 campaign. BJP’s message is coherent and its leadership advantage is huge The INDIA alliance meeting in Delhi is broadly an effort at political resuscitation. For three months, the opposition formation had virtually suspended such strategic level dialogue, as Congress prioritised the assembly elections. Crucial loss of momentum| This could have been partly recovered with favourable assembly results. As it happened, INDIA’s leading partner Congress stands devastated after losing in three states to BJP, reinforcing perceptions of BJP’s dominance of the crucial Hindi belt. The scale of the mountain the opposition is forced to climb hence appears quite forbidding. So let’s start with a few points of consolation for the opposition. Congress losses good for INDIA| These might paradoxically a...

THE DAIMABAD MAN. WHO WERE THE PEOPLE OF THE DECCAN BEFORE THE DRAVIDIANS AND ARYANS?

THE DAIMABAD MAN. WHO WERE THE PEOPLE OF THE DECCAN BEFORE THE DRAVIDIANS AND ARYANS? “The Dancing girl of Mohenjo-daro is perhaps the most famous icon of the Harappan civilization. The priest-king, also of Mohenjo-daro is a close second - with his officious expression and embossed robes. But have you heard of the Daimabad man, who has foxed historians, archaeologists, and Indologists for long?  Enigmatic, authoritative, and unique, this symbol of a lesser known, but as old or older, settlement further south, in Maharashtra is fascinating. More so because many believe that this may have been one of the oldest depictions of Shiva! Along with this now consider this. The ice age ended about 9-10000 years ago. The oceans at that time were almost 40 meters lower than what they are now. This could have meant that the land masses between India and Africa were more easily traversed by foot? Daimabad is a Chalcolithic or copper age site (2200-1000 BCE) on the left bank of Pravara, a tributa...

What ails our Democracy

https://www.deccanchronicle.com/amp/opinion/columnists/191223/mohan-guruswamy-what-ails-our-democracy-power-flows-from-the-top.html * The manner of anointment of our party leaders should raise concerns in our mind as democratically functioning political parties were meant to be the bedrock of our democracy. But they don’t. It is now the way of all parties, where inner-party democracy is dead.* The exception, and this is the great irony, is the CPM, a party committed to the establishment of the dictatorship of the proletariat and the end of liberal democracy. We in India have equality in the sense implied in a democracy. We have periodic free and fair elections — at least reasonably free and fair, an independent media, an independent judiciary and all of us enjoy all the freedoms we believe to be essential to be a free people. But why then are we unhappy with the system of government we have? To begin to understand this, we must first understand what kind of a democracy we have evolved ...

WHO EARNS MOST IN THE FOOD BUSINESS

I was able to access a major study by Agrifood Research Finland (MTT) and Pellervo Research Institute (PTT) on the food industry. 80% of the food sold in Finland is by food chains leading to a "retailer hegemony".  One major conclusion: "On average agricultural producers received only 10% of the price of foodstuffs in 2009, down from 14% in 2000." The wheat producer got only 4% of the price of bread. The egg producer got 30%, the maximum.  "For each kilo of rye bread purchased last year, the consumer paid 3.52 Euros, 1.24 went to the seller, while the grower of the rye received only 14 cents. 1.74 went to the milling company and logistics, and the rest went to the government as taxes."  This is what will come to be in India once Amazon, Reliance, Tata’s realise their plans for expansion into retail. The farm producers now get a far better deal from the traditional agro procurement and wholesale distribution, and mom and pop retail end. It is st...

BOOK REVIEW 8 LESSONS FROM THE BOOK "HOW TO BE DISCIPLINED": BY SHELDON HONE Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. Here Are 8 Lessons From The Book "How To Be Disciplined":  1. Set Clear Goals: One of the first steps in becoming disciplined is setting clear and achievable goals. Without a clear direction, it becomes challenging to stay focused and motivated. Start by identifying your long-term objectives and break them down into smaller, manageable tasks or milestones. This will help you stay organized and maintain a sense of purpose. 2. Create a Routine: Establishing a daily routine can greatly contribute to developing discipline. A routine provides structure and helps eliminate decision fatigue by automating certain aspects of your day. Plan your activities in advance, allocate specific time slots for different tasks, and stick to the schedule as much as possible. Consistency is key when it comes to building discipline. 3. Prioriti...
