♦️ *India Education Report Card (2014-2023):*
Let us start with School Education. How has the government performed in the last decade? This thread will explain through data, India’s efforts to claim its demographic dividend.
1. India’s population grew from 121 Crores to about 139 crores in 2023, a growth of 14.64%.
2. *The Number of govt. schools in India were 12.04 lacs in 2014 but fell to 11.28 lacs by the end of 2022. While our population grew by about 15%, our public schools fell by 7%, thus widening the gap.*
3. Correspondingly, *private schools* went up from 2.55 lacs to 3.35 lacs, a growth of 32%.
4. While population growth should have led to an organic growth in enrollments, in reality, they didn’t keep pace. *In 2014, the total enrollments in schools were 268.30 lacs, which fell to 265.24 lacs in 2022, a fall of 1.2%.*
5. The three North Indian states - UP, MP & Rajasthan had 5.22 lac schools in 2014 which fell to 4.80 lac schools in 2022 a drop of 8%. From 2011 to 2023, the population in these 3 states increased from 34.1 Crores to 40.3 crores, a growth of 18%
6. CBSE is increasingly becoming elitist in its approach. In 2014, India had 4053 Govt. schools affiliated to CBSE board which increased to 4715 in 2022, a growth of 16%. In the same period, the private schools under CBSE board shot up from 10728 in 2014 to 20874 in 2022, a growth of 95%.
7. The cost of education also has increased dramatically, especially at the school level. The National Sample Survey showed an increase in the cost of primary education by 30.7% between 2014 and 2018. If we extend this to a decade, this would have increased by an estimated 75% to 90%.
So, the report card is grim. Our population grew by 15%. Our government schools fell by 8%. Our enrollments fell by 1.2%. Our cost of education almost doubled. The northern states drag. In 2047, It would not be ‘Demographic Dividend’ but a ‘demographic nightmare’.
