The East India Company took over India by playing off Indian rulers against Indian rulers, and no one was exempt from this perfidy, except perhaps Ranjit Singh, possibly because he was the last one standing. In 1857, most of the princely houses who still proudly fly their standards today, like Patiala and Gwalior, supported the British against the rebels and even the last Mughal Emperor of India.
