95% of India

Professor V Raghunathan is critical of both BJP and Congress for where India is today. Post liberalisation in 1991, both Congress and BJP have ruled India equally. Read below what Raghunathan has to say about 95% of India. Reading this, one should feel  very bad for our country. "India’s GDP in 2024 is approximately $4 trillion (₹330 lakh-crore), with a population of 1.4 billion, resulting in a per capita income of about $2,800 . However, this figure is misleading when we consider wealth distribution. Ambani and Adani alone have a combined wealth of around $200 billion. The top 10 wealthiest individuals account for about $420 billion, the top 200 individuals for about $1 trillion, the top 1% of the population for $1.6 trillion, and the top 5% for $2.5 trillion. To put this in perspective, excluding Ambani and Adani, India's per capita wealth drops to $2,700. Excluding the top 10 individuals, it falls to $2,500; excluding the top 200, it drops to $2,150; excluding the top 1%, ...

On US prosecutors charging Gautam Adani: RN Bhaskar

#WATCH | Mumbai: On US prosecutors charging Gautam Adani and others in alleged Solar Energy contract bribery case, Researcher RN Bhaskar says, " There are two ways of looking at it. One, the US has found a fault and has charge sheeted Gautam Adani and his associates...But there's another angle to it. To understand that angle, you have to go back to the time when the Iran crisis took place when America had sanctioned Iran. That was the time when America had weaponised financial transactions...America has a knowledge of every transaction that takes place in the world. Because it has knowledge of every transaction that takes place in the world, it uses supercomputers and deep data mining, it can find out from where the money came and to which place it went. Effectively, America knows every transaction in the world. For the second part of the story, you have to go back to July 2023 when Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was in Delhi to address a Raisina Dialogue conference......

Russian literature: Characteristics and features

Russian literature is distinguished by a number of defining characteristics that make it unique and powerful. Here are some of its main features: 1. Philosophical and Existential Themes Russian literature often delves deeply into questions about life, death, faith, morality, and human purpose. Writers like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev grapple with profound existential and ethical dilemmas, reflecting the tension between spiritual beliefs and earthly struggles. 2. Psychological Depth Russian authors are known for exploring the inner lives of their characters with remarkable nuance. Dostoevsky, for example, is celebrated for his intense psychological portraits, especially in works like Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, where he examines guilt, redemption, and the complexities of the human psyche. 3. Realism and Social Critique Many Russian works are grounded in realism, portraying the hardships of ordinary life and the social issues of their time. Authors like Tolstoy...

The First Step Toward a Casteless Society: Caste Census

---Justice V. Eswaraiah The demand for a caste census has sparked widespread debate, exposing various perspectives. For many, it seems to be an uncomfortable reality. In Telangana, objections have been raised about the comprehensive family survey questionnaire, which aims to assess the socio-economic conditions of various communities. Such a survey is essential to understand which communities lack basic amenities. Without this data, fair representation and allocation of resources—whether in local, state, or national elections—remain unattainable. Criticism about collecting property details in the survey, citing privacy concerns, overlooks the necessity of understanding economic disparities. Knowing who lives in proper houses versus huts, who has assets, and who lacks basic facilities helps identify communities deprived of resources, education, and livelihood opportunities. Only with such data can the constitutional promise of social, economic, and political justice be fulfilled. The Ne...

Leo Tolstoy

This man is not a beggar or homeless wanderer  This is Leo Tolstoy  a Russian novelist and philosopher, best known for his novels "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". He is considered one of the greatest authors of all time and a key figure in the realist movement in literature.  He sold all he has for homelessness to have home and beggers to have food.  Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Russia and died on November 20, 1910. His writing often explored themes of morality, ethics, and the human condition, and his works are still widely read and studied today. Some of his notable quotes include: “ Don’t tell me about your religion, let me see your religion in your actions” “If you feel pain. You are alive. But, if you feel the pain of others, you’re human” Tolstoy's legacy extends beyond literature, too. He was also a philosopher and social reformer, and his ideas about nonviolent resistance and simple living have inspired leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Ma...

Traveling into the future is a definite possibilit

The past is a man-made construct. In order to travel into the past, we'd literally have to rewind the motions and direction of the entire solar system. The past isn't hanging out somewhere, everything happens within the now.   Traveling into the future is a definite possibility. If you orbit Earth for 50 years going the speed of light, you'll wake up roughly 500 years later even tho you have only aged 50 years.  Unfortunately, matter cannot even come close to hitting the speed of light so both are technically impossible.  The past is without a doubt impossible.... The future is a maybe for now

Why India Lacks a Globally Recognized Public Policy School

World’s largest democracy, with its complex democratic structure and urgent developmental challenges, sends its finest to be trained abroad Nov 16, 2024 Published in  The Hindu Why is it that the world’s largest democracy has yet to produce a world-class public policy institution? The United States and Europe boast of institutions such as the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard Kennedy School) and the London School of Economics which train leaders who shape not only national but global governance. Yet, India, with its complex democratic structure and urgent developmental challenges, sends its finest to be trained abroad. This is not for lack of policy schools — India has many — but it has to do with the structure of India’s political and institutional landscape. Public policy institutions thrive only when they influence power and decision-making. However, in India, there are limited access points for public policy commentators, academics, and civil society groups to influ...

Is India a Failed State? Or on the highway towards it?

Mohan Guruswamy  TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION: Is India a Failed State? Or on the highway towards it? History is strewn with failed states. The USSR probably was the greatest and most powerful of the states that failed. But the many nations once within it still exist and some like Russia continue to be major actors on the world stage. As a state the USSR disappeared completely, despite that we do not consider it a failed state. But Somalia, which still precariously and even vicariously exists, is at the top of any list of failed states. The term "failed state" entered our lexicon, initially, in the context of Somalia, Afghanistan, and sometimes Pakistan. It connotes a state of national being where the State is bereft of any authority and power. Authority and power are often confused as being the same. They are not. Authority derives from constitutional legitimacy and respect for the institutions such as the judiciary, parliament, permanent bureaucracy and press, whereas power is real...

Land ownership significantly influenced the political power

Land ownership significantly influenced the political power of the Reddys and Velamas in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Historically, these castes leveraged their landholdings to dominate local governance and politics, often controlling village leadership roles and local self-governments 1 4 .  The abolition of feudal systems in the mid-20th century allowed Reddys and Velamas to consolidate land, enhancing their political clout through wealth accumulation and patronage networks 2 3 .  This land-caste nexus facilitated their rise as political elites, with land ownership being a critical determinant of political influence in the region 5 6 The Telangana peasant struggle (1946-1951) significantly transformed land distribution and political power in the region. Approximately  10 lakh acres of land  were redistributed, establishing  gram rajyas  (village self-governance) in about  3,000 villages . This movement undermined feudal structures, reducing landlord...

Why BJP is opposing the Telangana caste census?

The BJP opposes the Telangana caste census primarily due to concerns about its political motivations, alleging that the Congress party is using it for electoral gain rather than genuine welfare of Backward Classes (BCs)  1 3 .  BJP leaders argue that the census distracts from Congress's unfulfilled promises to BCs and could exacerbate social divisions  2 4 .  Additionally, there are fears within the BJP that a detailed caste enumeration might reveal ongoing upper-caste dominance in politics and society, which could challenge their support base  7 8 . The BJP's main arguments against the caste census include: Political Manipulation : BJP leaders assert that the Congress party is using the caste census for political advantage rather than for the welfare of Backward Classes (BCs), claiming it distracts from unfulfilled promises made to these communities  2 4 . Threat to Hindutva Agenda : The party views the census as a potential challenge to its support base a...
